[Hermione's been hiding out around the house for the past couple of weeks, but considering the atmosphere over the past event, one thing has remained clear: she really can't stay here anymore. It's taken her a long time to actually build up the courage to simply ask, especially since she knows how certain people will react, but she'll never leave ( Read more... )

[Technically, Ron said he didn't want to see Sokka around Hermione, but texts should be acceptable, right?]

Are you okay?

That's fine. It's going to snow, so you should dress warm. See you soon.

I'll be fine, thank you.

[A little earlier than expected, Hermione's at the forge, bundled up as best as she can in several jumps and a thin coat, keeping an eye out for him.]

Sokka?

[He's not hard to spot, nor the signs of life at the forge. The few things Sokka has managed to collect from his bedroom are strewn around the forge, while his half-finished meal of fish sits near the blazing hearth.]

[Sokka tips his head around an obstruction and spots Hermione, heart suddenly racing as if she's surprised him. This was a bad idea, wasn't it? If Ron just happened to walk by... As he steps out into view, he offers Granger weak smile. For a friend, it's worth it, but that doesn't mean he's still not ridiculously nervous.] Hey. You look, uh-- i-if you come in, it's a little warmer...

[Truth be told, Hermione's excited to see him. It seems like it's been ages since she was last able to look at someone without feeling as though she's being silently judged. In fact, that smile is so appreciated that she has to keep herself from hugging him, instead closing the distance to come in.]

It's not that bad out, yet. I've had to go through worse.

[Hermione's had it harder than Sokka and he knows this. While he's hidden away from the world and avoided the looks and the questions and the reminders, she's been out facing it a lot more. It's brave and he admires that, even if he can't bring himself to do the same yet.]

[Sokka lets out a long breath, glad at least that he doesn't feel as awkward around Granger as he has around everyone else.]

It snowed last night, too. Did you see it? [He's missed the snow. He's missed Hermione, too.]

I did, yes. [Her voice is soft, almost as though she's been crying or yelling for so long that she can't really raise her voice much higher. Of course, though, that's not true. ... or, at least, not entirely.] It was nice. The last time I saw snow, I was out living in it. It was a nice change of pace to see it from someplace warm this time.

It's a good sign. [Already, he's starting to warm up (no pun intended) and he steps to his cold dinner, picking a little meat from the bones of the fish.] Hungry? I don't mind sharing. I have some hot choco- hot cocoa, too.

[She smiles a little and shakes her head, the company perking her up a little.] No thank you. I haven't really been all that hungry lately. Adstringendum has a way of limiting one's appetite.

Mm. I've only just started getting mine back. [And most of that is because it's starting to get cold and his body naturally wants to store as much as possible.]

Have you been okay? No major... blow ups or anything? [He's been concerned considering how Ron reacted when they told.]

[Hermione looks down for a while, not sure how to answer that. Finally, she shrugs a bit, still averting his eyes.] It's been quiet... for better or worse.

[He only needs her body language to know what that means. Nibbling at a flake of fish, Sokka finds he can't keep his eyes on her long with that thought on his mind. Feeling compelled, he brushes his hands off and crosses to her, pulling Granger into his arms.]

I'm sorry, Hermione; I know it hasn't been easy...

[Her back immediately stiffens when she feels him touch her, though that only lasts for a couple of seconds before she buries her face in his chest, hugging him back tightly and trying to ignore how familiar he smells.]

I miss him so much....

[Sokka frowns and squeezes her a little tighter. He can definitely empathize.] I know, but... he'll come around. It takes time, right? Time and- and a little bit of patience.

[She shakes her head against him, tilting her face a little so she can hold him tightly and still breathe.]

You don't know Ron. Even if he can bring himself to stop hating me... he won't take me back. I've hurt him too deeply for that.

[He closes his eyes and rubs at her back, all the while hoping not everything she's saying is true.] He wouldn't want to keep you so close if he didn't love you. Some space will help him realize that and maybe you won't feel quite so-- [He stops, unsure he wants to assess exactly what she's feeling.] It'll work out, Hermione. Somehow. I promise.
