Yep, I pretty much hate what she did to Louis, too. Just more or less abandoned him.
Hearts for Louis, always. I prefer him over Lestat anyday.

Also agreed, and what's with the random regression by his character from somewhat emotionally adjusted and keeping with the times in The Vampire Lestat to the unsociable hermit we see in Body Thief? Odd.

One would think that Anne Rice (She Who Must Never Have an Editor) would at least have some sort of compendium with relavant facts and information about what has been written before, especially seeing as the VC was written over a pretty long period of time. Consistency is certainly not her strong suit.

I nearly stopped reading the VC after reading Memnoch the Doorstop Devil. There were some interesting concepts in the book but the characterizations of the vampires had changed too much for me by that point. I never read Merrick , but I did read The Vampire Armand and that was when I figured it was time to part ways with Anne and wish her well with her re-aquaintance with the Catholic Church.

After reading this review (as well as having read other critiques of the book) I'm glad I didn't continue---it would really irk the hell out of me to watch the vampirescharacters change so dramatically.

Oh lordy I hate when authors become inconsistent with their plotlines in series books. That's the reason I recently stopped reading anything by Hideyuki Kikuchi. It was driving me nuts.

Well, I have to admit that I read Blood and Gold first, and in fact I've only read Lestat and The Tale of the Body Theif (in that order) since then. So I liked them all well enough, but not enough to continue with the series. I can see how reading them all, and in order, would make the inconsistencies that you point out annoying, but without that annoyance I found it a good book.

That doesn't excuse the inconsistencies though.
