it started out extremely slow and parts of it dragged out soooo much i wanted to throw the book across the room. it just didn't captivate me like i thought it would. i dunno.

I my own problem with Dracula is we're all very familiar with the story. That's the problem I had with the 2004 Broadway musical. Though I loved the score (and have the songs) the problem I had with it was we're all very familiar with the plot.

Also I've never been fond of epistolary style novels.

I like the story of Dracula though but I won't go out of my way to re-read the book.

Give it a chance; you'll like it. None of the movies really follow the book. I thought I knew the story too, but...not so much.

I don't like the epistolary style usually either, but it worked well here.

I loved most sections of the book concerning Renfield and the entire stretch of plot that dealt protecting Lucy from the Count each night. But reading it was like staring at drywall after Lucy died.

I actually hated Lucy and Mina. Probably for obvious reasons but just throwing it out there.

I love this book. I've read it many many times, and it never gets old. The style Bram used is quite interesting too.

Maybe your boredom with the story stemmed from watching the movies first? None of the movies do the book justice. And yes, it does take a minute for the book to get started. But that was the style back then. It works quite well in this book, though, and it is quite effective at building suspence and mystery.

nope, never saw any of the movies. so it couldn't have been that.

and yes, i understand it was written long ago but, it wasn't even that, i've read plenty of novels from the 1800's and all of those kept my attention and i truly loved!
