The Catcher in the Rye

I am officially a Survivor of this book. I just finished it and I am left wondering what the f*** I just read. While I was expecting even worse, I have to say that Holden is probably one of the most annoying characters EVER. It was like a 200+ page rant about..nothing. I understand you are suppose to be reading about a guy that is going out of ( Read more... )

scrub my brain, rants, at least the pages were numbered, classics, author last names m-s, holden

Some years ago there was a website called "Books in five minutes" (probably still around). For Catcher in the Rye the summary went like this:

"Angst, angst, angst, angst...

"I'm an asshole.

"The End"

I read about the first twenty pages and couldn't put up with the whining, which was saying something for me at the time because I was just as angst-ridden as Holden.

It was one of those books that I read because 1.) I got it at a book sale for 50 cents. 2.) Just so I can say that I've read it and know what people are talking about when discussing it.

I liked Catcher in the Rye. I wasn't a teen when I first read it, either. ._.;;; But man, if there ever was a book that divided people into "love-it-or-hate-it" camps, it's this one.

When I read it, I didn't get the impression that the reader should want to be like Holden. It was clear to me that he was a severely messed up kid in need of a psychologist and that sooner or later, he was going to "grow up" whether he wants to or not, trauma or no trauma.

I never said you were suppose to want to be like Holden? Or even like him for that matter. I just felt like nothing happened through the whole book.

I read it a few years ago -- I was probably about 26 at the time? I forget exactly when it was, but I definitely wasn't a teenager -- and I liked it, despite rarely liking first-person narrators, and you've pretty much hit on why.

I didn't like Holden, but I didn't hate him either because I felt like I understood him, and I was interested in understanding him.
