I also felt the female characters were weak to the point of being pointless.

Ahahaha I love this book, and its sequel. The sequel was an interesting change in direction and style, too; Wong is clearly growing leaps and bounds as a writer, especially when it comes to writing female characters.

It's very much the kind of book one likes if one adored the Evil Dead movies, loves Kevin Smith, and likes the humor web site Cracked (which Wong is one of the chief editors of). I can definitely see it being very much a "niche" book.

It was the title of the sequel I encountered on Goodreads that did first attract me. Good to know he's done some work on writing female characters as that weakness was so evident as though they were just set dressing in 'John'.

I think comic horror is a difficult sub-genre. I never really got the Evil Dead films, though my late husband adored them. Smith's films I liked rather than loved (except for 'Dogma').

Oh, yeah; Amy gets a point-of-view and her chapters probably make up almost a third of the book. I still wouldn't call him Super Feminist Awesome Man or anything, but Amy has a distinct voice and is capable in her own right, which is especially interesting as Dave and John fall to pieces in the sequel and Amy is the only person who can keep her mind together long enough to come up with a plan that isn't insane.

Comic horror is incredibly... subjective, maybe? You rarely see a comic horror it seems like everyone likes; I suppose because humor changes up so much. Hmmn...

That's pretty much what I put in my review, though I didn't call it a fail. I noted that it seemed like two very different books (a psychological horror that burrows into your mind and doesn't leave, and a juvenile humor book), and they didn't meld well. I can see why people like it, but I didn't.

It was mainly a fail for me because I expected to like it. Psychological horror and things Lovecraftian but it was the juvenile humour and weak female characters that were a thumbs down.

Yeah, the first hundred pages hooked me, and the last 380 let me down. Pity.
