I remember reading Richard III in high school and getting suckered in despite myself. Then, some years later I read a book with a severely unlikable protagonist and spent most of the book gleefully waiting for her deeds to come back and bite her in the backside (and being severely disappointed that they didn't bite hard enough).
If I ever feel like reading about unlikable characters, I'll go and re-read Richard III.
