I don't appreciate being patronised. I don't think I'm some special snowflake, I never have, I just wanted to discuss something that's really important to me. Yes, rape culture is rife in more areas of our media and life in general than YA but I chose to concentrate on YA because it's something I'm interested in, it's aimed at an impressionable audience, it's seldom talked about and it's a recurring trend in recent years because of genre trends and whatever the currenty fad is. Why is it bad to want to see changes? Of course I don't think I'm going to change anything with my special little blog but if people at least start talking about the problematic areas, surely that's a good thing? Even if it's limited to this small area of the media, it has the opportunity to expand. There are so many great bloggers, writers, feminists, etc, talking about this stuff and if it brings awareness of these issues to one more person then that's never a bad thing ( ... )

Hey, don't you know? If you just shut up about rape culture, IT WILL GO AWAY!!! Don't think you're so ~special~ that talking about it will make any difference. Just move on, nothing to see here, folks. Just some ladies whining about rape again. Jeez, so UNPROFESSIONAL.

I've never heard of Catherynne Valente. What sort of stuff does she write? Is there anything by her you'd recommend?

I focused on certain books because they were the ones being marketed the most heavily, the ones with the biggst buzz and they were also indicative of a trend in the genre (the original project reviews was based on the Twilight inspired trend for paranormal romance in YA and seeing how similar a lot of it was.) I never read a book deliberately wanting to pull out anti-feminist critique, that's an unfair thing to do. Even if it is only a small fraction that does this, although I think that's debatable, it's still worthy of criticism and discussion. The same can be said about any area of media. I just concentrate on YA because it's a genre I read a lot of ( ... )

You're just a whole galaxy of wrong, here. (Besides patronizing and uninformed.)

Outside the YA genre, writers review other books all the time. Sometimes they're even mean about it.

Criticizing one book, or an author, or even a trend, is not an attack on the industry.

The idea that an agent is going to read ceilidh_ann's blog and say "Wait, she has the nerve to publicly criticize books that perpetuate rape culture? Well, I certainly don't want to work with her!" is absurd. (Maybe Becca Fitzpatrick's agent might give her a pass, but c'est la vie.)

I'm also interested, since you speak with so very much authority about "the industry" and how it does and doesn't work: what is your professional role in the industry?
