I'm so glad I'm not the only one who hated this book. The plot summary makes it sound like the whole book is going to be about the tremendously difficult and emotionally taxing trial of reforming Jake into a good kind. But it seems like less than a quarter of the way into the book, he just decides to be a good kid, and does. The rest of the book is useless, especially the amazingly overwrought episode of putting on "The Sound of Music" that takes up so many pages at the end. I might not have any beef with this mediocre book if it hadn't won the Newbery Honor--that's like awarding Best Film to Shrek 4 or something.

Like... please. It's an average kid's book, there is no DEEP MEANING ffs.
