anyone else

Is anyone else totally weary of Young Adult novels nowadays?

I ask this because I work in a library and through my daily course of checking in books and shelving and then going through a shelf read, I come across the whole young adult collection. And what throws me, is all the pretty covers. I mean it has a pretty cover, and a decent description ( Read more... )

I personally loved City of Bones :/ but I do agree that pretty covers can guide you to an awful book.

I haven't actually read that series yet, but I've seen quite a few people in the community flag it as a fail which is why I listed it. It's nothing personal :)

But yes. This false sense of security with the pretty pictures. I'm sure that's how they make a good sum of their profits; people snag them thinking the book will be as good as the picture seems to be.

That's why I am looking forward to getting my e-reader because of the free samples of the first few chapters of books.

I loathe Twilight. I read it based off of a recommendation and somehow managed to power through all four books. Last one...utter trash. (My opinion, of course)

"The Book Thief" is probably the best YA lit book I have read in a while and the cover is nothing stellar. I know that I am inclined to read a book with a nice cover, but sometimes, the gems are not flashy.

I suppose my worry with YA lit is that it will take on a tone that I can't tolerate. That being said, I know there is great YA lit out there and I am just missing it. I would love to get my classes reading some sort of novel that all of us could love.

The Book Thief is one of my favorite books. I cried all through the last 50 pages.

It's honestly one of my favorite books released in the last several years with respect to YA. :)

True, but if I did that I'd never make it out of the stacks lol. Or I'd leave work with totes of books.

You're not supposed to judge books by their cover... :)

In all seriousness I have noticed the trend; seeing the pretty covers doesn't necessarily mean I'm more likely to pick them up (the only YA novels I've picked up by myself recently were The Hunger Games and its sequels which isn't really hitting the fancy cover trend). I have friends and a twin sister to screen the other ones for me :D

I'm still waiting for The Hunger Games from the library, but I just finished reading Catching Fire and OMG I MUST HAVE THESE BOOKS FOR MY OWN.

I never look at the covers of books when deciding to buy them - that's what the blurb is for. ;) But I am annoyed that lots of books now have absolutely gorgeous covers while the recent reprinting of my favorite author's books make the main character look all evil and possessed.

And if I'm on the fence, a gorgeous cover might sway me towards buying a book, but the blurb and first couple of pages normally give me a pretty good idea of whether or not I'll like it.

Oh I know, it's just the pretty cover makes me more likely to pick it up and read the blurb. And sometimes the blurb is interesting (that's how I lost brain cells to Twilight).

Yeah, a pretty cover might make me pick it up, but unless it's one of the books lying on a table or facing out, it's more likely to be the title that catches my interest enough.
