Today on my Twitter feed, a lady I follow highly recommended a book, Highborn by Yvonne Navarro.  I seriously considered unfollowing her over that one.

So there are things I love/like about this book.  While it is a Did Not Finish as well as a fail, it is not a total fail by any means.  I absolutely love the concept of this book.  There's this angel ( Read more... )

"Strong" and "violent" are pretty relative terms.

For many people, the only difference is that "strong" means beating up the bad guys and "violent" means beating up the good guys.

Interesting--both the concept of the book, and the thoughtful review itself. Too bad the book's not what it could have been--though if my library has it, I'll be tempted to look at it for free, just to see the maturity in tone cited. That's indeed uncommon. :)

I'll tell you something strange--I honestly do not think about the 1st person perspective vs. others when I pick up a book, or at least I haven't in a long time . . . and if someone asked me what voice 6 of my top books are, I'd have trouble remembering it for a moment (although perhaps I do have a preference, so I should look for a correlation). Is the "dreaded first person" a widely hated thing? Is distaste for it a personal matter, or is it considered poor form in specific genres like fantasy, where it come off as more Mary Sue-ish because everyone's got powers?
