Anne Frank Fanfic? Can We Not?

Sep 28, 2010 16:03

I've known of this article from quite some time but for some reason I didn't think to post it here. Important parts bolded to combat TL;DR.

My moral outrage, let me show you it )

interesting or bad articles, author last names a-f, sex scene failure

Oh God, I smell a Twilight esque romance from this shit. This is not cool, or appropriate. Coming from someone who read Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter.

It is completely disrespectful to take someone's real life and make things up about it as if that person were never real but just some creation in a writers mind. I can see why fictional novels might be written about historical figures that lived centuries ago. There is not usually much to go on about those people. But someone we know SO much about who died a tragic death...it's just plain disrespectful. The end.

Well said! That Anne Frank's diary was published suggests that we already know enough about her private life to not need a fictional account of her life. I don't understand the author's purpose in using Anne Frank as a character, except to tap into name recognition (which reads to me as just gross). The author could just as easily created an entirely fictional character.

It also says a lot about a person who would enjoy thinking about two real human beings they don't know and 'imagine' a sex scene between them. If they did have sex (which is pretty much impossible since they lived in such close confines with what, FIVE other people?), why would you write that? That is someone's personal, private moment. Not to mention Anne was a teenager. Disturbingly awkward.
