Oh, DeVoto, you make absolutely no sense. Go enjoy your cheap beer.

I can't decide if this book is supposed to be a satire or a trainwreck.

Ugh. Given that the book was written in the 1950s, the attitude toward women is not surprising. Out of curiosity I looked at some reviews on amazon--there aren't many, but people loved it. I know cocktail culture is making a big resurgence these days, but this sounds like a book that should have remained buried in a library basement.

This review makes me want to hunt down the bastard who wrote it (yes I know he's probably dead by now but whatever), tie him up, and force him to watch while I swill rum and Kool-Aide. :D

The 'it was another time' argument doesn't work on me because we don't look back on black slave women being raped by their owners and say "Well, those are the times."

We say, "There is no reason for this sort of thing." Period.

How outragious! Bringing up homophobia in a conversation about sexism and racism!

And while we're on that...

" a bit harsh especially when you're insinuating I'mokay with it."

I didn't insinuate anything. I thought it prudent to respond to your historical tolerance to my historical intolerance.

"What I said is to judge a book purely on things that WERE acceptable at the time"

Raping slaves WAS acceptable at the time. So, my point stands.
