The video game Resident Evil has spawned a number of spin-offs and the like, including many game sequels, a series of movies (both live action and animated) and the graphic novel abomination known as Resident Evil: Fire and Ice.
I should warn you all that I came into this book with little knowledge of the Resident Evil universe.
Thiiis is actually a big part of it. The Resident Evil 'verse is notorious for stupid characters, bad dialogue, and problematic plots. Seriously, I think their fans would be upset if they DIDN'T do these things (ESPECIALLY the bad dialogue. It's a hallmark from the first game.)
Most RE things do cut off in the middle, it's how their franchise has exploded. They're all just elements in a HUGE story, so the random bits that seem irrelevant are them adding to that universe.
some don’t even seem to have a purpose except for zombies. You essentially summed it up right there. I won't say RE is good, but it wasn't meant to be. The point was for zombies. Not knowing that going in, I can see it would be extra flabbergastingly bad. Those who are familiar with the canon though would go "yay, more RE." So I wouldn't say it's so much of a bookfail, as much as bad is the way it was meant to be.
But here's the biggest problem. I picked it up from a friend who is also a big RE fan. In fact, that's why he bought it. And even HE couldn't finish it because it was so bad. I've always kind of avoided the games because I like strong plots and these always seemed too full of holes, but when a fan is calling your work bad, it might be a sign.
