I think The Awakening was by Kate Chopin. And I actually really adored it. It was one of the few books that I liked my Junior year of High School.

it was by Willa Cather. much as i hated the book and forgot what it was about, i remember the author. i'd never know who the author was otherwise.

Summer before sophomore year we had to choose two books to read by British authors, and stupidly I picked Tess of the d'Urbervilles. I barely got through the first chapter before it totally lost me. Not only was it boring me out of my skull but I had absolutely no idea what was going on, so I just gave up and picked something else. I just can't understand at all what the point of that book was supposed to be.

I can appreciate Tess for the language and Hardy's skill with writing. It really is beautiful in places, and he deals with some interesting issues in a very forward-thinking manner. But I'll never love it, I think.

And, if you could unblock the PTSD that your brain suffered from reading The Awakening, what was the book about? The Awakening I read and loved was by Kate Chopin. Willa Cather's bibliography does not include a book of that title; perhaps you read My Antonia?
