The Lost Library exchange just wrapped up -- that's the metafictional one where you write a bit of a book or play or movie that's implied or stated to exist in another book or movie -- and it was, unsurprisingly, delightful.

I chucked two works into the fray, one straight-up unfinished script --

Romeo and Ethel the Pirate's Daughter (Draft 2, Read more... )

fic, recommendations, lost library

Not surprisingly, Shakespeare in Love is one of my favorite movies, but I never really thought to wonder about what those other plays might have been like. I loved your take on Romeo and Ethel! And the "Gaston" parody tucked in there. Also - and this is perhaps an odd compliment, but I did spend a lot of this year writing a "guide to early modern English" for my students - you have a great ear for the odd constructions that we don't use anymore, like the 'conditional inversion' of "did I have" instead of "If I had."

Anyway, it made me laugh a lot, even though the "final" version of Romeo and Juliet is one of my favorite plays.

Thank you! I really appreciate that compliment, actually -- I have a lot of fun writing in fake-Shakespearean, but I'm always afraid I'm getting tons of subtle stuff wrong that would be really jarring to an expert. So it's nice to know that is not as much the case as it could be! I'm very glad you liked it. :D
