OMB, I *read* that one about the conjoined twins and the evil professors, and I did not remember it until I went back and looked at your summary. I must have repressed the memory.
I've got to say, I liked The Gate to Women's Country and After Long Silence a lot. They are much less WTF than the rest of her books.
OTOH, I'm now really glad I couldn't finish Garden of Iden. Holy cow!
Hah, see, I've never actually read any of the relatively normal and award-winning ones! ONLY THE MOST CRACKTASTIC for tiny Becca's local library, apparently.
Got pointed here by rachelmanija and wanted to note:
1. I totally read those Wizard Children books! I loved the first one. LOVED it. I was so excited when I found the sequel.
...yeah, I still like the first one but OMG.
2. I was pointed here by Rachel after going through a bunch of Sherri S. Tepper books on Amazon trying to remember which is the one where newly pregnant (for the first time) women were tied down to be raped by aliens who, if you were unlucky, also ate your face. (Because GOD.) The moral of the story was, "If God makes you an offer you can't refuse, TELL HIM TO FUCK OFF." It was, I eventually figured out, "Shadow's End." Did you ever read that one?
3. If you're in the mood for crack, a bunch of Tepper books are $1 on Kindle: The Fresco, The Visitor, The Family Tree, and Singer from the Sea (and maybe others I didn't notice.)
HAHAHAHAHA OMG SHADOW'S END. Yes. I read that one. Distressingly, I ... might own that one. ALL I REMEMBER ABOUT IT THOUGH is a.) the horrible alien pregnancy rape thing where you got, like, a horde of tiny angry buzzing aliens in your womb that ate your fetus and b.) the patented Sheri S. Tepper ending of "the heroine ascends to a higher plane while her love interest stares sadly after her!" There are at least four Tepper books that end that way. PROBABLY MORE.
. . . I also own The Family Tree. Though actually I remember that as one of the least horrifying! The Big Twist in that one is that half the protagonists are actually cute animals, which, I mean, OK, I can deal with that. I don't think I ever read the other three, but I'm pretty sure one of them is the one where the aliens take away Jerusalem and tell humanity "this is why you can't have nice things!" . . . and part of me does want to read that one. But I think if I go back to the rich vein of WTF that is Tepper I may have to reread either Beauty or A Plague of
( ... )
I would not re-read Shadow's End. It was bad enough once. And yes, I remembered that the alien babies eat the fetus. The bit of the ending I remember is something about EVERYONE BEING OUT IN THE SUNSHINE AND NO LONGER HIDING THEIR EATEN-BY-ALIENS FACES and ...that was about it.
I would also say that for cracktastic plot twists, pretty much anything by V.C. Andrews probably qualifies.
I read Flowers in the Attic and alllllll the sequels as a kid and I would say that the CROWNING MOMENT OF CRACK in that series is in one of the prequels where you find out that this is a family tree that DOES NOT BRANCH EVER. The protagonist of "Flowers in the Attic" marries her brother, but you find out in a prequel that actually, her mother and father were also brother and sister and in the even-earlier prequel you find out that the evil grandmother was also married to her own brother.
I somehow managed to escape pretty much all of VC Andrews as a kid! One of my friends actually just started a read/reread of the Flowers in the Attic books, and tried to talk me into reading them too, and I just laughed and laughed at her. I read a lot that was terrible as a child, but -- for once! -- THIS IS NOT MY CROSS TO BEAR. Fortunately there exist plenty of recaps to allow me to relish the WTF without actually having to read them myself. >:D
