So much as I enjoy The Hunchback of Notre-Dame as a totally ridiculous novel, secretly I think that the real reason for its existence is to serve as the basis for Notre-Dame de Paris the French musical, which I love with a TREMENDOUS AND FIERY PASSION.

Don't get me wrong: Notre-Dame de Paris is exactly as cheesy and ridiculous as you would expect

Oh my god, LOVE NEVER DIES. I mean I can't judge anyone for watching that voluntarily, because I . . . also have . . . twice . . . but only for the purposes of FULLY APPRECIATING exactly how terrible it is!

GREATEST MUSICAL EVER. I wish I'd actually been able to convince my French class to watch the musical, that sounds awesome!

Yeah, I give a lot of the English subtitles the side-eye too. I am still SUPER ANNOYED every time they translate "Notre-Dame" as "Mary" -- they're also referring to the cathedral! DON'T LOSE THAT!

Phoebus IS the ultimate schlubby manchild. Esmeralda, Fleur-de-Lys, you can both do so much better!
