Though, the presence of Anna Maxwell Martin and Rachael Sterling (the crossdressing leads of Night Watch and Tipping the Velvet respectively) made the lack of canon queerness very confusing for me.
(Did you recognize Millie as the leader of the village of scarred women in SWATH?)
Haha, I still think of Anna Maxwell Martin as Esther from Bleak House - and I would watch the series where Esther from Bleak House Fights Crime IN A HEARTBEAT.
But I would also one hundred percent vote for more crossdressing and queerness in The Bletchley Circle, so you know.
(Whoa! Totally did not remember that, but now you mention it, I knew she looked familiar!)
I am actually watching a bunch right now, but the one I'm watching with my roommate is Gaksital - mostly because it's set during the Japanese occupation, and we loved Capital Scandal SO MUCH.
Yeah, there are, uh, plenty of good and bad things both to say about Gaksital. My roommate and I spend a lot of time shrieking things at the screen and talking about how we can't really recommend it to anyone else . . . but it's TOO LATE FOR US.
Haha, I am actually planning to start watching Arang and the Magistrate tonight! :D I also need to catch up on Faith, which I was watching for a while before I got distracted by school.
This is my only even remotely Anna Maxwell Martin-related icon. (I mean, I think it is actually her in that dress, in Bleak House, but I could be wrong!)
Anyway, I heard about this recently and really wish I could see it! Maybe someday it'll come out on DVD... (Or maybe one day I'll get a decent computer and be able to download stuff. Either way!)
I hope it does come out on DVD! I kind of want to get it for my mom. And (to answer both your comments in one) yeah, I always get really frustrated when stories just kind of ignore that - like, on the one hand, I get the wish-fulfillment aspect, but on the other hand, it's also . . . basically pretending privilege does not exist, which, er.
Yeah. And the funny thing is that, for me anyway, actually acknowledging the difficulties non-privileged people face at those moments would make for better, more interesting storytelling! All of a sudden there are so many more options for things to do...
Also, yes to your point about a female Sherlock! I often think that about the Doctor, as well. Like, when Ten tells Martha to walk around Elizabethan London like she owns the place, and I boggle every time because there are so many reasons that he can get away with that and Martha never could.

I mostly associate AMM with Bleak House too. She was pretty excellent in South Riding, too.
