I am typing this entry on bootleg internet from my new apartment! genarti is THE GREATEST hero of the revolution for coming down all the way down from Boston to assist with hauling two apartments' worth of stuff up and down flights of stairs. From now on, when I am forced to do something necessary requiring endurance and muscles, I will say, "My strength is as the strength of Gen because my heart is pure!"

And now for something more interesting than moving, I have been meaning to recommend the movie Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame ever since we saw it a few weeks ago. Why? Because it has:

1. Andy Lau as Detective Dee, wuxia Sherlock Holmes, solving the MYSTERY of various officials SPONTANEOUSLY COMBUSTING!

(The director, re: this casting: "Who said that Di Ren Jie must be plump and old? He could also be very handsome. Wit and looks can balance on another." Thank you, Tsui Hark!)

2. An emphasis on strong women, including Empress Wu in a variety of amazing costumes . . .

. . . and her fighting handmaiden who is totally in love with her!

(Wikipedia tells me that this character, Shangguan Jing'er, was originally supposed to be based on a real-life lady poet and politician, Shangguan Wan'er. But, explains the director, "there were some things Wan'er couldn't do, like being a top-notch martial arts expert.")

BECHDEL TEST! \o/

3. Detective Dee's other sidekick, the only albino character I have ever seen in a movie whose character did not consist solely of "THE ALBINO!!!" or "THAT EVIL DUDE!!!" He's just an official who happens to need a parasol in the sunlight! We were shocked but extremely pleased to discover this.

(Jing'er also gets to be in this screencap by dint of being awesome.)

4. Such various plot accessories as an army of angry attack deer, a giant Iron Man suit made of clay, and a whole long sequence in an underground circus city!

ALSO DID I MENTION the spontaneous combustion? Because I feel it is worth repeating. (But I promise, it's spontaneous combustion based very firmly in SCIENCE. Ish.)
