Puck, do not read this review. Anyone else who is triggered by zombies of any sort, do not read this review. If you have not read Feed, do not read the marked sections of this review or the comments; since it came out so long ago (hah, all of three months), I merrily spoil shit all over the place, and there will probably be spoilers in the comments ( Read more... )

horror, omg so awesome

READ IT. OMG, do anything you need to to read it. Snatch it off the library shelf ahead of a fifth-grader. Camp out in the bookstore. Mug somebody. IDK, but read it.

Disclaimer: I am not actually advocating mugging someone.

Mug a zombie. They're bound to have a copy, and I'm pretty sure there's no laws against mugging zombies.

OH MY GOD FEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED!

I'm so glad you're done with it. I'm so glad I have a fellow fan to fan over it with. *wiggles* I'm so excited right now I just want to pick up the book again and reread it.

I SHARE YOUR CRUSH ON SHAUN. Though it's less of a crush and more of a desire to hug and give him cookies and cocoa.

THAT SCEEEEEEENE. You know. That one. That one that made me bawl. What did you think of it? Wasn't it amazing and heartbreaking and I can't believe she did it TWICE! (The first time with, y'know, Buffy, and the second with Georgia. But reading Georgia's blog as it was happening ... ho crap, I'm practically tearing up just thinking about it.)

*FLAILS AT* OMG IT IS SO GOOD. SOOOOOOO GOOD. Man. I don't even like zombies usually and I heart Feed so much.

My crush on Shaun is an asexy crush on Shaun, aka I want to be his bestest best friend forever and poke zombies with sticks with him... so basically I want to be Georgia. It would be awesome.

THAT SCEEEEEEEEEEENE how many characters did she kill in that one scene? Three, if you count Shaun's happy and sanity, and AUGH I cried like a child. GEORGIA DON'T GOOOOOOOOO. I remember going, "She's going to pull a cheesy last-minute save, right? She wouldn't kill her own first person narrator. No, there's gonna be a cheesy last-minute save. Georgia can't be infected or Shaun'll come up with a miracle save or she just won't get infected through sheer willpower and it'll be cheesy and I won't care OH GEORGIA DON'T DIE" and then oh man. SO GOOD. Painful to read, especially the blog entry, but SO FUCKING GOOD.

SHAUUUUUN. *cuddles him*

I want to reread this book and I want to read the sequel and I want to hug Seanan until she pops, deluging me in Newsflesh-world ideas and words and brilliant characters that make me cheer and laugh and gasp in horror and cry like a hungry, angry baby. I lent the book to a coworker before I left for SDCC, and I can't wait to hear his reaction upon my return!

I'm very selective about my zombies, mostly because I don't like horror movies, and that knocks out like 98% of zombiedom. Whenever I like a book or movie with zombies, it's an exception to the rule. Shaun of the Dead was the only zombie story I truly enjoyed up until I read FEED, and I'm guessing it's because the zombies are secondary--if not tertiary--to the story. The characters are fully human, and we care deeply about their desires and fears and relationships. They aren't just avatars for zombie slaughter. Great characters and resonant themes transcend all genre.

I CRIED SO HARD oh man. I started crying when Buffy died and I pretty much did not stop, although it got very, very bad when Lois died and then AND THEN I wailed like a small child. This was on an airplane. I'm pretty sure my seatmate thought I was mental. But this is okay, because I am mental.

At any rate. I don't usually like zombies either, for precisely the same reason. They always seem to be used in gorefests, which are so not my thing. But then I read Rosemary and Rue, and I was like, "well, I trust this author and I love the voice..." and then someone described Feed to me as "Night of the Living Dead meets The West Wing" and I was like, "SOLD." It really is such an awesome book, and the zombies are brilliant. I love the worldbuilding so much. *is a worldbuilding geek*

PS: did you notice Seanan McGuire and I geeking out about how awesome you are on her journal? Because that was one of the more surreal-yet-awesome moments of my life.
