Phone Etiquette

I grew up before caller-id, answering machines, and CPS being called if you left a child under age 12 home alone. Learning phone etiquette was a big deal. I was taught that I was supposed to answer the phone with a pencil and paper ready. "Hello, this is the Last_Name Residence, My_Name speaking. May I please ask who's calling?" Out of curiosity, what have you taught your 6 year old about calling 911? One of the reasons we still have a land line is that I don't want my panicked child having to dig through various pockets to find a cell phone if she needs to call 911. Is there a better way?

in most places, you can dial 911 from an land line that does not have paid service.

I hate phones. I only answer if it is one of my parents calling, otherwise I wait for the answering machine to pick up and decide if it is worth it to call back. Usually if my husband is home I try to get him to answer the phone.

This is probably bad phone etiquette, but I'm okay with that.

Me three . . . the only people I regularly talk to on the phone are my mom, Mike, and _delphiki_. If you're not one of those three people, you probably shouldn't be calling me.

Same here. I absolutely hate the phone. And I figure if people don't leave a message, it's not important enough for me to return their call. And I only have a cell phone for emergency purposes, and even that is a pay-as-you-go because I don't need the amount of minutes I'd get in a contract.

Yep. My children rarely answer the phone, but I'm teaching the eldest to answer this way.

Really? I. I cannot imagine a conversation important enough that I couldn't hang up for a bit and then call back later. :)
