I think they're great for places where a small person would like some freedom to walk around a bit, but still needs the security of an attachment to an adult. I don't really see the material difference between requiring your kid to hold your hand all the time and having a length of fabric/plastic connecting the two of you.
I don't understand why people think a stroller is superior to a leash, and that having the kid forced to follow you around on one is degrading. A stroller does the same thing: restricting the movement

We use them when we go to the zoo since the youngest hates a stroller, and is now too big for it. We have two. They look like backpacks with tails though, and not really the leash, which they like.
