man, thats rough....

I do remember kids being sent home from school about this time of year after eating ramps. That smell just comes out of your pores. I wonder if it's something she's eating?

kids who ate them and came to school...wowwww..it was horrible. Or really people who ate them and went anywhere. I hated this time of year when I was a kid.

Some houses just stink. I have been in plenty of them. If you bathe daily but you live in a very smelly environment, and your clothes smell like the house or whatever, then you're going to smell bad. It could also be something she's eating, I suppose. Either way, I feel bad for her. I am betting it has to do more with her clothes and environment than her personal hygiene.

I bet her mother isn't washing the little girl's clothes. There is a certain, really rank smell that overly dirty clothes have.

I feel awful for this child, although I want to kick her mother for going to the news media. What the fuck is WRONG with that woman?

That's where I'm at with it. I'm sorry, but SOMETHING is amiss here. If this were my kid, I'd be doing everything I could to fix the problem and it doesn't seem like the mother is doing that. I have an 8 year old and while certain parts of her can get stinky when they're not clean (her feet, her hair, etc), she doesn't have B.O. yet and I don't see HOW a child that age would smell so terrible if it weren't for either a health/diet issue or that her house/clothing are disgusting. I could be wrong, but I've been around a lot of kids that age and a situation like this just SCREAMS CPS investigation to me.

I agree with this, and carrieb's idea of a child advocate being needed to step in and see what can be done. :/

Same.

I have a friend who WAS that kid when we were in elementary school. He was not my friend then-- he had no friends, because he and his sisters smelled so bad, and kids are mean. The issue was that their plumbing was always breaking down. That meant no bathing and no laundry being done. The kids always smelled like a hamper. The school nurse was involved, but there was only so much she could do.

This is so crazy. I am with those who are saying the clothes are probably not being washed. I also wonder if the mom is supervising the bathing and making sure there is soap involved. Sadly this could totally be my niece and nephew. They reek because their mom never taught them to use soap and she doesn't do laundry.

In this case, I think the child needs some kind of advocate to come in and access the situation and provide some parent education, or get her to a specialized doctor.

I don't use soap and I don't stink. In fact, it was only when I stopped using soap that I stopped having problems with stinky armpits that were resistant to everything. I use soap on my hands at the sink and I use shampoo, but other than that...just water and a wash rag. Soap can strip natural cleansing oils. I highly doubt it is a soap issue.
