Your teenager is just entering high school. They decide they want to join the marching band. It's kind of creepy. I would find it inappropriate if any of my teachers said it to me, so I feel the same about them saying it to my kid. I wouldn't do anything about it though. If my kid felt the need to do something about it, I'd just encourage them to bring it up to the school counsellor.

I think it would be hilarious, and I can definitely picture my high school band director (male) saying it to my classmates.

Were they joking? I can easily imagine this as a silly joke, like the time one of my gym teachers encouraged us to work extra hard on our rope climbing so that we could rescue ourselves from a trapped elevator by climbing the cable. If the coach was a constant creeper, yeah, it's an inadvisable line but if it were an obvious joke, no, I don't see anything wrong with it.
