Clothes and gender

Last week, I took my daughter shopping for some clothes. She's a bit of a tomboy and deeply into pirates, dinosaurs and dragons. The girls department had nothing of the sort, so we went down to the boys section and got her a few tops and some pirate underpants. On the way, we passed a mother who was telling her son, "no you can't have that, it's ( Read more... )

Eh, I'm not so tough about t-shirts and jeans. But I must admit, I'm not buying my son a Hannah Montana shirt. Even if I was all gung-ho, there is no way my family would be fine with it. I mentioned buying a doll for a little boy and a kitchen set and I got a lot of 0_o

And no, I would not buy him dresses or skirts. BRB saving for child's inevitable therapy.

God no. It was the first "girly" thing that came to mind!

oh, ha, no. the spawn often wears girls' t-shirts. especially now that he's decided he's a goth kid, it's hard to find the ones he wants in the little boys department, we often resort to buying womens' size small/mediums/whatever. looking around my living room at the "clothes we just bought for the school year department" I'm guessing he wore a pink shirt today, because i don't see it on the pile.

The only line we draw is with makeup; and that line is the same i would draw with a girl his age-- i wouldn't let a girl that age wear makeup to school, no eyeliner for you. suck it up, dude.

No; I like it when she wears "boys" clothes. But I don't know what I'd say if I had a son who wanted to wear a dress to school.

After explaining that society sucks and people will probably make fun of him for wearing girls clothes, If he still wanted them and seemed to understand I would buy them. I would probably start out with one or two articles of girl's clothing first to see if he ever wore them again after the first time before going out and buying an entire girl's wardrobe.

And, I'll be honest, I would have a much easier time buying my son a pink t-shirt, or a pair of girls jeans than I would buying him an acutal dress.

I would actually prefer both my kids like to dress in boys clothes (I have a boy, and I'm pregnant with a girl). It is much easier to find boys clothes that aren't somehow inappropriate.

I really hate the way kids' clothes are so gendered, especially at Target. Like, girls' stuff has to be *~*~PINK~*~* and FLOWERY and CUTESY WITH RIBBONS and the boys have to have BLUE with TRUCKS & PLANES & SHIT.

Why can't they just be "kids" stuff?

WHY LADY WHO DOESN'T MAKE THE CLOTHES?! WHY!?!? :P

I have no idea, but it is annoying.

Do you have any idea how hard it is to find baby clothes that don't either look like they are for a boy, or have the words "princess" or "spoiled" on them somewhere? Why do all baby girl clothes have to be pink? I like some pink, but I need variety! She can't wear pink every day, it will look like I never change her clothes.

luckily I've been able to find a ton of girls clothes in green. Target is good for that.
