Author Note: Last Christmas I first saw the lovely 1940 movie The Shop Around the Corner, with Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan, which was the movie that You've Got Mail was based on. There have been other remakes as well, and The Shop Around the Corner is based on a Hungarian play. I was intrigued by the black humor in SAtC and wanted to see if I could bring that into a modern-day story. And I thought that the plot suited itself perfectly to epistolary fiction. So this is inspired by both YGM and SAtC, with my own touches. The story title was inspired by “The Golden State” by John Doe.
