westboro strikes again

The most unusual thing about this Easter is that, on the way to church, I drove past members of the Westboro Baptist Church standing at the corner of an intersection and picketing a Methodist church with signs that read, GOD HATES F*** (their trademark slogan), "GOD HATES YOU", and "GOD HATES YOUR IDOLS" (sacrebleu, what is this, something true ( Read more... )

I understand feeling a church is off target in their doctrine...but to do that!!!!

We have a church in town everyone knows as 'the gay church'. It is in the part of town that is very openly gay friendly, has a gay pastor and has always been a local sponsor of the gay pride stuff. However, it is also the only church in town that allows Sexaholic Anon groups, has AA meetings everyday, reaches out and does tons of homeless ministry benefits and also helps with AIDS Hospice. So, where does that leave us? None of us have it all correct....

sorry...off soapbox now.

Hmmm. The service of the gay-friendly church should put others of us to shame! Isn't interesting how we can see God's work in even bad situations? He certainly doesn't let Himself be hindered in getting stuff done on earth.

I'm pretty sure that the four Orlando churches were chosen as representatives of their denominations, not because they are specifically "offensive" to Westboro. They were the biggest Baptist church, the biggest Assemblies of God church, the biggest Methodist church, and the biggest Catholic church (technically it's a shrine because it's not a member of a specific parish/diocese).

Is it really the ONLY church in town that reaches out like that or just the only one you know of. I know lots of churches that are doing celebrate recovery and some use their small groups as a part of pointing to recovery through discipleship. We do outreaches in all kinds of places...in Target and Walmart to the projects and have many different ministries out of our church.

I think a lot of times some churches don't advertise that kind of thing so much b/c they mostly want the main focus to be on the true healer, Jesus. Then all the other stuff follows suit.

Just another twist on it. You know? :D

I know for a fact they are the only church that allows the SA meetings. There was one other church that used to hold them and i called there and asked why they stopped, they said it embarrassed some of the members to have that going on. And yes, there may be a recovery group somewhere in a church going on....but if the person needing it doesnt know about it....how effective is that.

There are other churches doing homeless ministry, and lots doing AA, but I know there are only a few others doing AIDS hospice. many do cancer and general hospice. Again, there may be others doing it...but I actively searched and looked and they were the only ones reaching out to people who need that (just fyi it wasnt me but someone close who needed it). So while I can say they may have the doctrine all wrong...they are working the mission better than some.

The one about the pastor is killing me. I don't know why. It's so...absurd.

They sound like a bunch of chickens to me. I am still amazed anyone is a part of that. Hmmm, I guess they missed the first and second greatest commandments in their bibles.

Amazing.
