War on Chanukah

Dec 12, 2011 10:44

Had a somewhat depressing weekend. Wanted to buy Chanukah decorations so that I can finally decorate and found NOTHING. It's not like I live in the middle of bumfuck nowhere. I live on LI. Jewish people are all over the place. What the fuck, dollar stores?! And Seasons had a sad section for Chanukah. Will have to try again this weekend. Maybe hit ( Read more... )

I was surprised by how much Hanukkah stuff there was at Target and Bed Bath and Beyond--and that was two months ago! Walgreen's also has stuff, including pretty menorah candles.

I think the "war on Christmas" idea is nonsense, but I do think you could say there's a war on celebrating one's particular holiday of choice. Being lumped into the generic greeting of happy holidays is something I do not find particularly satisfying. How many people actually celebrate more than one holiday? Well, I mean, I do, but I'd rather say Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah than cower away from acknowledging either one. If someone's celebrating something in particular, I'd like to know what it is, and I'd like them to be ok with me announcing what I celebrate! Tolerance has no foundation in ignorance.

*steps off soapbox* All that being said, I am grateful to live in a part of the world (and a time in the world) where I can celebrate whatever I want without fear of abuse or death. Really.

I should try Target. I was in Wal-Mart the other day and was bombarded with all Christmas stuff and didn't find any Chanukah stuff... so we shall see :)

Me too.

I think I bought my undecorated ornaments at a craft store. Michaels or AC More.

I hope you find some decorations! It stinks for there to be so few options out there.

I'll try Michael's for clear ornaments.

I hope so too!

You'd think, right? Haven't had to look for Chanukah decorations since the 90s. But now that I'm out of my parents place, I need my own decorations and lo, there's nothing!

I used to have a dreidel (sp?) but I don't think I have it anymore. A neat little wooden one.

Come to Midwood! Or Borough Park!

Sorry, I hope you find some nice decorations over the weekend.

Snrk!

My mom told me I could borrow some of hers. They aren't using all of them this year. Still want to have some of my own though.

If you want to get clear ornaments to decorate yourself, you might try checking Michael's or A.C. Moore. :)

One of these years I'm going to get myself a proper Festivus pole...

My friend Becky uses a metal music stand as her Festivus pole :)

I'm noticing a dearth of Chanukah decorations and such around here as well. Granted, I never had to look for it before, so perhaps I notice it more now that I have a Jewish boyfriend, but still. Wanted wrapping paper and can't find it. I would have hoped Dollar Tree would have had SOMETHING, but it's Christmas-geddon over here. Meh.

:-\ You can always use the blank side of Christmas wrapping paper and then just decorate it. I've done that.
