I have clocked up about 6 weeks of annual leave, I get 14 weeks parental leave paid (up to a modest weekly sum of about $340 after tax) by the government, and I can have up to a year off unpaid by law. My employer is more generous, and will let you have up to 18 months, and pays what they call an ex-gratia payment of 6 weeks' full wages when you come back for more than 3 months.
Could be worse. But lots of people I know have large mortgages to feed as well as babies, and rack up extra debt before they drag themselves back to work. Restarting part time work when baby is aged between 6 and 12 months seems to be the thing to do amongst my peer group. The only full time parent I know is a dad who has three kids and still does a few part time hours here and there.
