Driveway

It was finished in five hours. And now my poor car that has suffered the consequences of people who don't pay enough attention when they drive, and egging from bratty kids who need a life, is parked off the street and less in harm's way.

You must live in a very old house. Most houses at least have a driveway or an anny way to a backyard drive. I mean, ya had to park the horse and buggy someplace. =)

The house is about 100 years old. You see the driveway right next to mine? I own half of it - longways. There is a garage in back that is split right in the middle of the driveway, so you have to angle off to park in it. Again half theirs, half mine. It's a very tight fit for a small car like mine. Getting a large car in is a nail-biting experience. Works well for horses. Not so much for cars.

I parked in it until I got a bad snowstorm and had to shovel out the whole damn driveway by hand to get out.

Fast forward to a few years ago when my neighbors moved in and decided they needed the driveway for their three cars, because God forbid they should ever be out on the street. I suggested sort of a "joint custody" where I'd have it one week and they'd have it the next. Nope.

I decided taking them to court to sort this out was more trouble than it was worth. So my car, which was newer than any of theirs, was pushed to the curb. Whatever.

Now, this driveway is mine. My own. My Preciousss. I plan to get it paved next year.

Off-street parking is truly a beautiful thing. When I lived in PA, it was on-street parking only, for 11 years. Really makes you appreciate having your own private driveway. Congratulations. :)

Thanks! Yes, times have changed since the days of telegraph and horse and buggy and one outlet in each room of the house and dinky closets.

Yay for driveway! I know the pains of on-street parking. In my old neighborhood, each house was wide enough to park one and a half cars in front. And because this is a driving city, everyone has at least two cars. There were parking wars with passive-agressive notes left on windshields and everything. So in addition to the unsecure on-street parking, we also had to deal with the very real possibility of having to park a block or more away because there was nothing else available.

Urban planning fail.

I can't get too mad at "urban planners." Who could have forseen having two cars because the husband and wife both work, at a time when few people had cars at all?

The house I was in was built last year, so they can't even use that excuse. :P Just plain crappy planning.
