The problem is you *know* they've already decided they know all the answers and it's usually a complete waste of time to even try having a rational adult discussion about it. Sigh...
It seems clear to me that this individual's concept of Christians and Christianity is based on his own experiences with the faith. After all, most Atheists in America were raised in a religious environment.
There is more than a touch of irony here. This individual has judged one interpretation of scripture to be closer to the truth; however, he has also made it clear that the bible is not true. Only one suffering from compartmentalization could point out the true reading of a book of untruth.
One of my friends has a partner from England who comes from a long line of Atheists. I hope to have a discussion with him sometime about that. I'd love to get inside that guy's head.
You make a very good point here. It seems to me that many atheists who are from religious environments come up with that "literal interpretation" (There's an oxymoron!). If I believed that interpretation, I would reject Christianity, too.
Personally, I find genuine faith which may not include everything under the blanket of said faith a lot more respectable than complete and total blind faith.

I'm sure he's read the Bible and understands it completely because you know, it's such a simple book.
