Season Three / #23 - All Our Yesterdays

Oct 25, 2013 22:05

One of the better episodes where Spock and McCoy find themselves having an adventure apart from Captain Kirk, though it can be difficult to watch at times since a time lapse activates Spock’s more primal Vulcan instincts and he spends most of the episode rattling McCoy around, growling, or making out (with a strange woman). Still, lots and lots of redeeming footage.

Rating: 5

Highlights:
  • Trudging through frozen wastes strengthens the bonds of friendship - Spock refuses to leave his more fragile shipmate behind and drags him to shelter.
  • ‘Bones’ is Captain Kirk’s familiar spirit, (smirk).
  • Some hurt/comfort for sick McCoy, who suffers from frostbite and exposure. Spock identifies him as, “The worse patient in the entire crew of the Enterprise.”
  • Fantastic dialogue, including some of the best Spock-McCoy confrontations in the series. For example, when McCoy raps out his traditional “hobgoblin” remark, Spock snatches him up by the throat and snarls, “I don’t like that. I don’t think I ever did, but now I’m sure.” Moreover, Dr. McCoy’s later, “You want to stay here. In fact, you’re highly motivated to stay here!” gives me chills every time.
  • Role Reversal: Dr. McCoy wears his logical-thinking hat, while Spock goes emotionally berserk.
  • Enter psychologist McCoy, who manages to hold a session while being asphyxiated by his patient - successfully!
  • Although Spock attempts to push the doctor back through the portal alone, he is unsuccessful. They must return together.
  • Although it’s very brief, one of my favorite scenes for the triumvirate takes place at the end of the episode when, on the very edge of destruction, Spock and McCoy return through the portal, and Kirk rests a hand on both of their shoulders.
