Twelve years later, catching up slowly...

Today i got my Learners Permit. Yes, I know, I am in fact 28 years old. There were four people doing the test at once, and I was the oldest one. Also, the only one there without my parents. If you can manage to put away $800 a fortnight while also paying rent, you may find mortgage repayments not too bad. Our mininum repayments are only about $1500 pcm, although obviously it depends on how much you borrow. Also, you can often borrow 100% of the purchase price, depending on whether or not you can find a lender to go for it, although it does often cost you an extra few thousand in "insurance". Something to consider if you find a place you like before you have the full deposit saved up. Just make sure you can cover the stamp duty and legal costs (for us about $10,000).

Once kids come along, the government is reasonably generous... we'll be getting a little over $160 a fortnight from the government, which will help quite a bit, and that's at the lower end of the assistance available.

Don't worry about the learners permit. I'm the only person I know who's learners permit actually expired before getting a licence. I recently renewed it, and I'm actually learning to drive this time.

Fortunately we're old enough that we don't have to bother with pesky things like logging 120 hours.
