Run-in With The Influenza Virus

Brennan was sick. Her head and eyelids felt impossibly heavy, she was aching all over, her nose was running and she had a terrible cough. She never got sick. So maybe this was why she didn’t understand that she should have been home resting instead of doing paperwork in her office. She was tired. But just to be stubborn she continued to work anyway, instead of focusing on resting and getting better. Typical Temperance Brennan. It was getting harder and harder to keep her eyes open, though. She was just so tired. Maybe a power nap wouldn’t hurt. She lay her head on her arms and fell asleep at her desk.

A while later Booth stepped into her office. “Hey Bones! We’ve got a-” but he didn’t finish his sentence as he saw Brennan sleeping peacefully at her desk. Quietly he walked to her and watched her sleeping for a bit. She had obviously been tired for her to fall asleep at work. He wanted to know why. Maybe something was wrong.

He poked her gently a few times to try and wake her. When she didn’t stir, he jabbed her harder. She woke slowly and looked around. After establishing where she was and why she was there, she addressed him. “Booth.” She sniffled “What are you doing here?” Her voice was muffled and nasally. She regarded him through glassy eyes. “Do we have a case?” Another sniffle.

“Your sick” he said, in all seriousness.

She shrugged halfheartedly. “I’m not that sick.”

“You fell asleep while you were working. That’s not like you. I think you’re sick.”

She just groaned at him. He felt her forehead and asked her if she’d taken her temperature. She shook her head no, and he said he was willing to bet she had a fever. She mumbled something incoherent at him and he guided her over to sit on the couch.

“I take it you’re not going to go home?”

“Not willingly.” She said with a smirk. “I just feel tired. It’s not like I haven’t worked through fatigue before.” Cough.

“Yeah, Bones, but that was an ‘I didn’t get enough sleep last night because I was at the lab late last night’, tired. But this is a ‘my body is telling me to rest because I’m sick. Most likely because I’ve been overworking myself’, tired.” She rolled her eyes. “You’re sick.” He stood up and then surprised her by grabbing her feet and pulling them up onto the couch. At this she lost her balance and fell face-first into the couch. “Sleep for a while. I’ll see you later. Okay?”

“Mmmm.” She hummed, and closed her eyes.

That was easy, he thought. Their case could wait a bit until Bones was feeling better. He decided that he would help her along.

Some time later Brennan lazily opened her eyes. Her mouth was dry, her head pounding and her whole body shivering with sickness. Slowly she rose and headed back to her desk. What she saw there made her smile despite her miserable state. Set on top of her work was a bottle of orange juice, a package of cough drops, some cough syrup and some vapor rub. She laughed a throaty laugh and smiled to herself. There was no note with the items, but she didn’t need one to know whom they were from. Who would go out of their way to make sure she was taking care of herself besides Booth? She grabbed the orange juice and laughed some more.
