[Dr. Temperance Brennan strides briskly ahead while reading documents in a yellow manila folder she's holding in her hands. She is dressed for work in black slacks, sensible shoes, and a white shirt under the blue lab coat of the Jeffersonian Institute. She appears somewhat harassed, as if trying to out-walk someone, and her tone of voice is mildly ( Read more... )

Yes, that is probably not your phone. That's your complimentary gift/torture device rewarded to you upon entering the City. CONGRATULATIONS!

It seems fairly innocent for a torture device. Does it emit some sort of sonic sound waves or other harmful auditory sensations?

And why are you congratulating me?

Let me rephrase that.

The phone isn't a traditional torture device. By the will of the City and the Deities, it come on at almost any time or place, and thus broadcasting you to the network in full embarrassing glory! ...Among other things.

I'm congratulating you because YOU ENTERED THE CITY!

I welcome you. I'm Kamishiro Tsurugi. I am pleased to make your acquaintance.

If your phone was an entire City, I'd have to ask how much you paid for it.

[startles, staring at the device, then hesitantly lifting it to her ear, feeling incredibly silly]

Uh... hello?

Hi.

[pause]

Try not to freak out. I know that's a little hard, but... it's kind of important. You're in a place called the City.

[hesitant] Yes, I was approached by a Mr. Kamishiro who kindly informed me of this. Personally, I believe I may be unconscious and dreaming this up, though. This place appears too irrational to be an actual existing possibility.

Whom am I speaking to, may I ask?

No, it's certainly not.

That was an unhelpful comment, considering I'd already established that.

Oh well then I've proved myself as entirely unhelpful

I'm Myrnin. Welcome to the City.

Dr. Temperance Brennan. Thank you, I suppose.

[He's listened through the other comments, surprised not to be able to hear Angela screaming from across the city.]

Do you usually experience full multisensory phenomena while you're dreaming? People who report tactile and olfactory stimuli in particular would tend to have a history of lucidity.

...Usually only with nightmares. This is starting to look like one to me. Perhaps I fell in my lab and suffered cranial trauma that resulted in prolonged unconsciousness. Coma patients have been known to report vivid, realistic dreams upon waking.

Coma is comparable to slow-wave sleep, delta stage not dream state. Any dreams they have would be during the waking process. Hallucinations brought on by acute brain trauma would be more likely.

You're also questioning your experience. Common enough in hallucinations, not so much dreams.

[lack of rational explanations make Brennan slightly cranky] At this point, I take any rational, scientific explanation as to how I suddenly just... appeared into this alternative realm from my lab in D.C. almost literally in a blink of an eye. Transmitting large amounts of material from one location to another in a quantum level only works in science fiction.
