Christmas is coming*

Well, Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas and an awesome New year to all my F-list (and anyone else who happens to drop by)!

And, of course, Baron H chimes in with his own unique view on Classically Educated*I don't do PC versions of stuff, so despite being an atheist, we're calling it Christmas here.  After all, it's no longer a religious holiday, is ( Read more... )

Well, yeah, refusing to call it Christmas is acknowleding a significance or meaning atheists don't recognize. Peeling the label off an empty bottle won't make it any emptier.

Exactly. Plus, I see no reason to change names of things just to avoid offending people who are professionally offended by stuff.

How, exactly, can anyone be hurt by calling it Christmas, unless that person chooses to be hurt? I am one of the people who should be affected by this (atheist in a country so Catholic we have a friggin' Pope!) but I just don't see it. Have fun, wait for the fat guy on the sleigh and get gifts = Christmas, even for atheists!

The problem--well, consider a Corpus Christi procession in Northern Ireland. They're not doing it to lift up Christ, they're doing it start trouble. And "Merry Christmas" is sometimes used as a euphemism for "Go to Hell, you fucking Hebe!" or as a means to compel "Christ-killers" to identify themselves by their failure/refusal to respond, or to compel non-christians to profess Christ whether they want to or not. Perhaps not often, but too often, just the same. So I don't object to school districts implementing a standard "Happy Holidays" greeting for "winter break" and I'm really glad that this generation of Jewish kids don't have to deal with the awkard school Christmas pageant.

OTOH, I don't mind you calling Dec 25th Christmas.

Well, considering that December 25th was originally an appropriated pagan celebration, it is so muddled that I can only really laugh at the people who use it that way. Ignorance plus hate is a sad comb...

But anyway, Merry whatever it is - hope you have a good one!

If I see any good people over here, I'll tell them. Then we'll eat them!

On a more serious note, have a great holiday season!
