The greatest movie ever? Part 2...

Nov 14, 2013 10:48

I had used the same post title when I watched Gone With the Wind, of course.  I concluded then that Scarlett & co. were great, but perhaps not good.  It's certainly not a movie I'd watch again.

Casablanca, on the other hand ( Read more... )

Perhaps this weekend would be soon enough.

I think I could watch it every week...
Oddly enough, it was a year ago today that I mentioned the song "Perfidia"

I think I've mentioned before that the key thing toward this being so good
is that they hadn't yet worked out the formula;
later movies of this sort would essentially be contrived.
Also, it was early enough in the war that the OWI and Hays office weren't yet up to speed;
Another month or two later, Reynaud would not have passed,
on the grounds of an "unfair" depiction of Vichy France.

Twenty years ago, I would have liked a remake starring Mel Gibson and Rene Russo,
with Danny Glover playing Sam, Jack Nicolson playing Reynaud, and Johnny Depp playing Victor.
But it's too late for that cast.

Now? I think George Clooney could do a good Reynaud, and Ben Affleck a good Victor.
And I thnk I'd like to see Wil Smith play Sam.

I think Will Smith's image may be a bit too sophisticated and worldly for Sam - who is clearly really smart, but also endearingly loyal and non-self-serving.

But the main issue is that Rick is virtually uncastable...

"Yeah... It'd be a good fight though."
:)
You're probably right, but I still think he'd play the part really really well.

I'd give Rick to Tobey Maguire;
if he didn't want it, Di caprio would be my second choice.

Because I seldom go to movies! I was tempted last very rainy to go to our Omniplex to see GRAVITY but from what I hear I'm glad I didn't.

Heh. Being in Argentina, where movies come out a couple of weeks later, I always get the advantage of knowing what my friends in the northern hemisphere thought of the movies in question!

I agree, it's a great movie. Even my teenage son enjoyed it :)

Heh. That is the ultimate acid test!

But it is so timeless that I guess it's not that surprising.
