Instruction manual for the dead

The Egyptian Book of the Dead is more of an fascinating read than an entertaining one.  This is to be expected, I guess, since it is actually a collection of funerary recitations and instructions for the dead in the afterlife, as opposed to a narrative.  The edition I read was the classic Budge version, which is notable mainly because Budge himself ( Read more... )

It IS a bear to read, but leaves you thinking once you have gotten through it.

Back in the 90s, when I was doing a whole lot of spiritual soul-searching, I too read the Egyptian Book of the Dead. Fascinating, indeed--and really creepy!

Yep. Definitely creepy. And weird to think that parts of it are 4-5000 years old... It's hard to remove the Victorian connotations from the image of Egypt.
