Can anyone think of a REALISTIC young adult novel by an AMERICAN writer that uses omniscient point of view from the last 20 years? It can be limited omniscient or the big old editorial kind. Danke.

It's a crossover, but The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold uses omniscient if memory serves.

I'm finding that everything I can come up with is cross-over. (Which is actually bolsters my point that American YA authors very rarely write in this point of view outside fantasy.)

I smell writing challenge! (never mind that I love omni like my very first teddy bear)

Oh, my next book is totally going to be omniscient. It is the best, most underused point of view!

Unless, of course, my thesis totally burns me out on it. :)

You're absolutely right-- I think most omniscient POVs are within bounds of fantastical or MR territory. You may want to look into any of the Laura and Tom McNeal YAs -- I remember that in CRUSHED they did 3rd person close with alternating characters (in alternating chapters). Also, not for your paper but just as an interesting thing to check out there is a book called You & You & You (not an American author if memory serves) which I absolutely love-- the narrator actually interacts with the characters he/she writes about-- asks them questions, etc., which affect the outcome of the story.

I'm in CT brain right now too. WHY? Why did I choose magical realism?

I'll check out You & etc. -- sounds fab.

Oh, critical thesis, how I ... feel you are a big distraction from my novel!
