They're finally cracking down on Facebook at work. About time! It was amazed how many times people would be glued to it as I was walking past, playing Mafia Wars or Farm Town or whatever. It always irked me when they would post the highscore they got on Beweled Blitz... while at work!! I mean, c'mon people... a little common sense here. *shakes ( Read more... )

Compare that to the web policy at my place of work. All internet and corporate intranet sites are blocked unless specifically whitelisted.

The process to get a site added is not particularly simple, even if the need is obvious. One official policy & procedure document instructs us to go to the Federal Trade Commission website for information and forms under certain situations. It isn't on the whitelist, so I spent most of a week going around with I.T. to prove we need access to the site. The process to approve access to a site in our own corporate intranet is actually a lot more involved, involving approval throughout corporate I.T. instead of just locally.

So I finally got it whitelisted. So when I'm bored instead of just looking around mapquest (one of the few sites that is whitelisted that has any personal use whatsoever, besides maybe usps.gov and ups.com) I browse ftc.gov reading complaints against telemarketers and pyramid scams.

That's just rediculous. There's being strict and then there's being blindly ignorant of what your policies are actually doing because more than not, it'll conflict with something else as or more important for the company.
