Alex Drake made her way into Luigi's with a smile on her face. Yes, she had wanted very much to spend time with Gene Hunt. And maybe she did think he was a very handsome and sexual person. The tension between them was something she could not deny. Still, it was not something she wanted to admit to him ( Read more... )

Gene arrived some time later. He had had a few things to finish up in the office first, a few phone calls and a few forms. He still wasn't sure how he had gone from drinking in a good old fashioned pub to drinking in a bleedin' Trattoria - one of the many mysteries of London.

He crossed over to the bar, and slung his Crombie coat over the back of a chair. "Men? What about 'em?"

He retrieved his cigarettes and lighter from his pocket and laid them on the bar. "Large scotch, Luigi. Put it on my tab."

Alex looked up at Gene with a shocked expression. She hadn't expected him to hear her. And yet, of course he had. She smiled and lifted her wine glass, taking a sip from it as Luigi brought Gene his scotch.

"Just remarking how confusing and complicating that men can be." She stared up at him, wondering if he was actually going to sit down or just stand there.

"Have you ever actually paid off this tab of yours?"

He sat himself down and took a sip of his scotch. "Men? Complicated? Nah, see, there's four things a man need to be 'appy." He counted them on his fingers as he spoke. "One. Food. Two. Footie. Three. Sex. And four. Sleep. Chuck in some fags and booze and you got yerself a happy bloke." Simple, yes?

"Birds, on the other'and are the most confusing things in the world. Riddles, the lot of ya."

He lit up a cigarette and took a drag, exhaling the smoke away from Alex. "And no, I haven't paid my tab. It's a tab for a reason."

"See, I can't agree with you. Men are more complicated than that. And women aren't as complicated as you think." She watched him, grateful for the smoke not being blown in her face. That in itself told her he wasn't all bad.

"Women want the same thing. We need food. We need sleep." She chuckled at him. "Most of them like sex." She took a sip of her wine, staring at the glass like it held all the answers of life. Or maybe using it so she wasn't staring at him. "Women just want honesty more than anything else. They want men to be honest with what they do and who they are. If they're honest, everything else falls into place."

"Look at us, Genie." She grinned as she said the nickname. "We may not always agree. Sometimes we confuse each other, but... We're always honest. I respect you. We all follow you. You're honest with us and you lead us like a proper leader should." Lifting her glass, she tapped it lightly against his. "See, honesty."
