Trial Thoughts

So a lot of my free-time thought is turning to upcoming gaming at the moment. There's the campaign I dreamed up Saturday - on which, more when I can get at the book; Shadowrun fermenting in the background, and the possibility that I'll be opening that longstanding supers universe up to more than the core playerbase come October and university in ( Read more... )

It's a crying shame that I'm planning on running, as I would love to play Savant. I'll grant that this is because I've read the Birds of Prey stuff.
The characters I know least about from that list are Jason Blood and Hitman (seen Jason Blood in one comic, though he did seem cool... can't remember seeing Hitman in anything, cept maybe once when he cameod to X-Ray vision Wonder Woman's costume).
On the whole, I'd suggest maybe leaving out Alan Scott and the Spectre, as bringing their power level down to that of Black Canary and Huntress seems to me like it would do the characters a disservice. If anything, I'd say Gotham city is at it's very best when the characters have little or no powers whatsoever. In the films, certainly, the powers have been kept to a minimum, especially in the early Burton films, and Batman Begins. Most people don't think of stuff like Green Lantern when thinking of Gotham City.

See, I reckon it's a workable thing to do, at least with Alan (as his PL keeps fluctuating according to writer anyway).

The best Jason Blood I've seen is his appearance in Moore's Swamp Thing run.

Mmmm, interesting prospect. I like most of the female characters listed, probably especially Black Canary and Huntress - you won't include Oracle? If I considered playing a male character, Nightwing would be a favourite...

I won't include Oracle as a PC as it's a fresher's adventure and I don't want to hand someone whose movement is limited not just by their disability but also by their honkin' great computer setup to a novice player who hasn't roleplayed before.

Oracle will, in fact, be featured in the Huntress and Canary statblocks, though.

Zatanna will be statted on a par with the others. Technically she's more powerful than most of the others, but the others scare people a lot more. ;)

I'd second that point about Zatanna. Magic users can often look like a really sweet deal, in just about any genre, and very often players aren't prepared for the drawbacks or the complexities.
In fact both Zatanna and Alan Scott have the interesting caveat that their powers require a confident and creative player. Same probably goes for Jason blood. Characters like Savant, Canary, Hitman, Nightwing, Robin, and Huntress have fairly simple "point and click" style abilities, which can often be devolved down to "I hit it" if the player isn't feeling up to much more than that.
Spectre is a mix of the two really. Physically powerful, so he can just be played as a brick, but with some whacky options open to a more creative player. The toughest part with him would be understanding his more metaphysical limitations.

...Though it's hardly like this is telling you anything you don't already know.
