Warcraft can be a fun game, especially if you have friends to play it with. It has a fairly good questing system to keep the levelling process from getting too grindy, there are a number of 5-player dungeons to run, and they release higher and higher tiers of 10/25-player dungeons for raiding

It entirely depends on how fast you get tired of games. If you can play through Diablo 2 a bunch of times, and not become focused on getting items, then you can probably play a MMO as well.
For me, after a while of playing Age of Conan (an "adult" [gore, sexuality, etc] MMO) the charm and immersion fell away and I was left with game mechanic talk: character builds, item sets, crafting and harvesting. Even the "heavy" RP guild I was in turned into an item scrounging guild.
A "trial run" of 1-3 months usually doesn't do it. To get a real feel of a game, play for 6 months. ... And yes, that is too much time to dedicate to something that costs $15/month. Your money could be spent elsewhere.
P.S. Don't be a closeted gamer. Go find a group in the real world to role play with.

One thing to keep in mind is what side you want to start out with...Horde or Alliance. I've played both and they each offer unique playing styles.
If you get it and decide you want Horde, come visit me on Trollbane. I am usually playing Dienvey, a Blood Elf Mage.
