Under http://www.livejournal.com/manage/comments/ you can require CAPCHA for anonymous commenters or all non-friends. I recently decided to allow anonymous comments in my journal, in case someone without a LiveJournal or OpenID wanted to comment, and with the CAPCHA I haven't had any problems so far.
But this seems to be an increasingly common issue on LJ. I would definitely change at the least your anonymous comment settings if I were you.
