It's one of those statements that, when properly contemplated, explains much. Like, constellations: Certainly, the psychology of seeing patterns in chaos is well known. But can you imagine how bored you'd have to be, to perceive creatures and objects in the scattering of stars?
Much of Taxil-style scandal-mongering seems to have the same motivation - the desire to whack the ant nest of society, just to watch the ants boil and mill about. People still do it today.
p.s. I suspect foods like bread pudding arose the same way: Cabin fever combined with a shortage of supplies. “I dunno, what the heck, why not.”
