The "dark night" confuses almost everybody.
It is supposed to be a gift;
It is often seen as punishment.
Lovers of the dark may be creepy.

We all know what to do in the dark.
We stumble, we wait,
We turn on lights.
We recognize confusion
as the beginning of enlightenment.

That is true, but it should never be taught as a path, in my opinion. It is too open to exploitation. What you do with your pain is your business. What i do with my pain is my business. I will have pain which the "world, the flesh, and the devil" inflict and it is an advantage if i can deal with that in a positive way. The pain of John of the Cross was inflicted by his "brothers" and it did eventually kill him. Out of it came some beautiful poetry and a deeper spiritual life.
