“Stoke” - I thought you were being cute. Fortunately the video is labelled correctly.
“Cerebral cortices” - I live in Appalachia. It's good to hear someone who knows how to speak correctly. (Data, for example, is the plural of datum. “These data,” not “this data”.)
Thanks for the correction. I am also conscious of the deterioration or our language use.
I confess that i have not watched this video. I am aware of the speaker and am pretty sure i can guess what she said. Her book. My Stroke of Insight is on my list of favorite books. Having a left brain stroke, if her description is to be trusted (and i do trust it), is a lot like having a mystical experience. I plan to watch the video when i have twenty minutes of privacy + wakefulness.
It might be interesting to imagine a story wherein the main character does suffer a stroke, and while these are obviously destructive, yet in this case the destruction is more demolition, i e removing a blockage. The diagnosis includes “an inability to process spoken words” - because he's reading minds, and getting that mixed in! Or he DOES have a mystical experience that leaves him in contact with Higher Forces. Or whatever.
I like that idea, though reality continues to amaze me more than fiction, almost as though our minds cannot keep up with our potentialities.
There have been plenty of stories where the opposite thing happens and a gift becomes a curse (Flowers for Algernon, Limitless) The Taoists knew that every blessing is a curse in disguise -- and vice versa. I think my autism has been a source of power as well as weakness.
