I gotta admit, first time watching was a massive blur of wonder and being in awe, but second time round, these two stood out a hell of a lot. They were fantasticly well written in terms of "lightening up" the atmosphere of such an intense experience. I was shattered, having fooled myself into thinking they made it through to the end, having forgotton who had been lost.
Simply wonderful people to have such high spirits despite what was happening around them. That kind of morale is so important in so many ways.
I didn't notice them the first time I watched it. Now I can't help but notice them every time they even appear on screen. My favorite bit being: "Well, Don, I was at home in Tonawanda, but then Hitler started this whole thing, so now I'm here.
I must admit, I did notice him enough to absolutely hate it when he died. He might've just been 'funny guy with the smirky mouth', but he did always make me laugh. Penkala, though, is definitely a character it takes a couple of viewings to become aware of. Which is a pity, as he's great too.

After reading Malarkey's book, I now see how close their friendship really was, and that makes me love them even more.
Penkala too. <3 I love him too. <3 He doesn't get enough love from the fandom.
I've seen RL pix of Skip and Penky, and I gotta say, they were ADORABLE.
