Now this is what I mean by a good performance. Let's face it, Robin Laing is tall and skinny, and Babe is not. But they have a similar cast of face; and between a passable Philly accent and surprising depth when depth was not expected--he's more perceptive than Bill, and more introspective--I'd say Babe is one of the particularly successful adaptations from book to screen.
Oh Babe, so much love for the kid...I think I fell in love w/ him not only when Roe kept asking him if he had any morphine, but when the story about Dorris came out of Gurnere. From being a replacement, it seemed like he fell right into the company like one of the men.
I have yet to read the book, but he is one of the men I look forward to reading more about.
I've noticed that during "Bastogne", he really is a "babe" in the sense of the word. He's scared, angry, and just needs someone to hug him and tell him things will be okay.
I love how Bill "adopts" Babe at the end of "Carentan", taking him under his wing and showing him the ropes, treating him just like if he had been in Toccoa.
Fantastic performance by Robin Laing, down to the stellar accent.
Having read Babe and Bill's book, I can now say that I've learned quite a lot more about the real guys and what they went though and that makes me love them even more.
The first thing i noticed about Series!Babe was his smile in Crossroads *swoon*. Then i always kept an eye out for him.
My two favorite scenes with Babe, off the top of my head have to be; 1. With Gene in the foxhole, having his hand wrapped up. and 2. When he informs Webster of Bill's absence.
Arg, it gets to me (not in a bad way, mind you.) how little emotion he shows when he says it, you'd think Bill just got nicked by a bullet and he'd be back in a day or two.
Robin Laing did an excellent job in playing Babe. I'm not going to point out things like the accent because it's already been mentioned what a great job he did.
Bill & Babe's book, i've already talked about in the Bill discussion. Certainly my favorite of the books i've read so far.
