Obama's speech on race

linkI wasn't able to catch the speech live but I just finished reading the text. I found the speech simply amazing on so many levels. His message of hope and unity, of course, provides the intellectual underpinnings of the speech but it is so much more than that. In sum, Obama proves yet again he's willing to tackle big issues in a way that brings ( Read more... )

I especially liked the statement that, “In an era of stagnant wages and global competition, opportunity comes to be seen as a zero-sum game...”. I've been "shocked and awed" by politicians use of ecnomic fears to justify their policies. Put another way by rather funny comentator noted: "Our president, who believes in the piss on 'em, I mean, er, trickle down theory of economics and who has made a practice out of robbing the poor to give to the rich, is now faced with his latest monstrous creation: an American economy that has gone bust."

Yeah it's pretty out of control. One thing I also liked was how he said something to the effect of "people get angry at others when their jobs are shipped overseas instead of getting angry with the corporations that are doing the job outsourcing." My husband has always said this and I agree... It's like they're still dividing and conquering when all the workers should be in it together fighting against the true tyrant, the "person", the corporation! Okay, let me simmer down lol. But yes, the speech had me in tears. Quite awe inspiring. I help it buoys his candidacy even more!

It's a pity that despite it being incredible, I'm pretty much convinced that the Democratic Party is going to make sure that Clinton gets the nod.

"In sum, Obama proves yet again he's willing to tackle big issues in a way that brings folks together in a meaningful way."
--Doesn't the across the board critical reception of the speech kind of suggest the exact opposite?

I've not done an extensive survey of the press/commentator's response on the speech. I thought it was fantastic however. Most reviews I've seen have been pretty positive...but I've only really looked at the NYTimes and SFGate at this point.
